Dating back to the 11th century, it was part of the city&#8217;s defensive system and remained hidden for years. The defensive enclosure surrounded the medina and was linked to the Alcazaba and, further up, the Gibralfaro Castle. Over the centuries the city grew, the walls lost their function, and a large part of them disappeared under new streets and buildings.  <\/p>\n<p>That is why today the remains appear in pieces and in unexpected places: in a basement, in a parking lot, in a building&#8217;s courtyard.
